I wanted to recreate the vibes I get from looking at old photographs that I can find locked away in storage or in a closet in my house. Those pictures always had a warm hue to them. They were always partially blurry on the edges and never had the subject in complete focus. For every super neat and clean professionally shot photo that exists, there needs to be one that was done by some random person with a camera at their house. That's what I really wanted to capture. Home and adventure.

I used Snapseed for this set of photos. I liked the filter customization options better with Snapseed compared to Pixlr for vintage photos.

  1. Hi Jake,
It appears that you took your pictures on a farm or at least a rural setting. Even with the pictures in color, vintage comes through. Is number one part of a machine? I like the chill spot best.

    1. Hi Jake,
I started some of my comments a week ahead of time by mistake. I can see now that your photos were taken in Levittown. The majority of your pictures and numbers are centered. They are also grouped appropriately. The train evokes memory through travel.I don't know in what type of buildings your vintage pictures are located; they are good choices.

  2. Hi Jake,
The construction was great, everything was centered, numbered (#12 needs fixing), and spaced the same.
Your communication was good. You tried to capture your home life and memories of when you were younger and just happy times. You also tried to take photos that showed vintage, rough looking buildings and things.
Your conception was good. You had close ups and far away shots and each worked really well, they always showed something that was either a memory or vintage looking. I think using frames for some of them might have helped though.
My favorite photo is #18. I ride SEPTA everyday and I love trains. I like that the train was moving and it seems like it was a rainy gloomy day.

  3. Jake,

Your construction was great, I liked how everything is big and centered. Your communication was good and I got the feeling you were trying to communicate with pictures you would find in an old closet. I liked how you showed vintage colors and made the pictures warm. Your conception was good. I liked the mix of close up shots, far away, and the different angles. Very creative! My favorite photo for this week is #4. I really felt like it included all the things you were trying to communicate and the vintage coloring drew me in.

  4. Hi Jake!

I like your variety in visual organization when it comes to your construction. You're really good at taking pictures of spaces, too!

Your pictures always communicate that you're always traveling, and exploring, but very few of them have that vintage tone. I think if you played around with effects more, the photos would look really great with vintage filters. Rather than being taken to another time, you're taking me to another modern day place. Definitely mess around on Snapseed - it's great!

As for conception, I like that although you were in well-known places, you got up-close-and-personal with things you're interested in in those locations to show us what you're all about. I think these photos are a lot more personal, letting us into your home, or your friend's home, and showing us some of the people you interact with.

My favorite photo is #2. I actually had no idea that was part of a car until I looked closer, and that's what our pictures should do - make people investigate more to find out what they're looking at.

  5. Hi Jake! For your construction, all of your pictures are numbered and centered and I like that you made them as big as possible. It would have been nice to add some more space in between your pictures though, so that it’s clear which number corresponds to each pictures and also to allow your viewer to focus on one picture at a time. For your communication, your pictures can easily be read. It’s clear that you wanted to shoot pictures with a home-town feel, as well as some pictures in the city at locations that aren’t overtly in the city unless you’ve been there before. I especially liked picture #8 because it fits the theme of a random person taking a picture out of focus. For the conception of your pictures, the small town feel to your pictures seemed to be your theme. I really liked that you shot a lot of pictures outside of the city this time. My vote for POW is picture #3 because the color is the most salient out of all of your other shots. The doors’ rustic nature adds to the vintage theme. I’m also curious as to what the writing on top of the doors is referring to, which adds to the mystery theme. Good job!

  6. Hey Jake! You took some really interesting photos this week. Your Construction was great. Your pictures were numbered, centered, and evenly spaced. But I wish there was more space between them though. Your Communication, was good. Even though you didn’t use any filters, I still felt a vintage vide from your work. Your use of lighting gave me an old and decrepit feel. And some of your scenes were already old looking, which went with the vintage theme. I think you could have given the pictures even more of a vintage feel by playing around with some filters though. As far as Conception, I thought you did well. I like the variety of distances and angles. It made looking through your blog interesting. I also like how you “framed” some of your scenes. I really liked pictures 11, 12, 13, and 14 but my vote for Picture of the Week goes to #13. The way the chair is in focus and the surrounding area is blurry draws my eye. The walls frame the chair and the pop of red pulls me into the picture. The crumbling walls and the old-fashioned chair definitely go with the vintage theme. Awesome job this week!

  7. Hello Jake,

I really appreciate the variety of ways in which you opted to organize and construct your photographs. You convey a good sense of space and really allow me to enter into your shoes and imagine where I'd be and how I'd feel.

Unfortunately, I don't really detect as much of a purely vintage vibe as I'd had hoped from you, but I can understand that's quite difficult with so many preconstructed filters than tend to get in the way of the actual photographs.

My favorite photo is #2, I think. It looks a lot like the photograph I'd taken for last topic, except it's a bit more expected, since this is the vintage topic... regardless, it's great!

  8. Hi Jake!

form - They all are centered and I like that you uploaded both vertical and horizontal photographs. I learned from you how important it is to upload big pictures! I would like for you to put some space between each picture because it is hard for me to check which number is which.

content - I like your choice of objects from old to new ones. Some of your pictures are colorful and seems "vintage." I want to know how come you put #7 and #8. What did you want to express from them because it was taken at the same place around the same time. Did you want to change the main object between them, you or a grown-up puppy?

impact - All of your pictures have vintage atmosphere. #16 is impressive to see power to the people and colorfulness around it.

I like the picture#5. Colorful shoelaces, vintage from the carpet and mattress' classic colors.

  9. Hi Jake,

I like your concept of re-creating photos that you'd find in an old box stored away. I think that idea really captures the spirit of this assignment, and it comes across in many of your photos. So good work on communication, too.

The construction is nice in many of these, because it is clear that you purposely framed and organized your shots. I especially like 8 and 14 for these reasons. Even in a setting as mundane as 8, just the fact that someone is walking through it adds interest and mystery. I can't really tell what is going on, but I definitely want to know more. In 14, using a bicycle wheel to frame two specific people tells a story, which might be my imagination doing its work, but I think that's the point.
