For most of my photos this week I visited the Eastern State Penitentiary to really capture the vintage/memory feel! I felt like the pictures were able to tell a story and convey the memories from the prison. However, I also wanted to portray a little bit of my memory as well to make some pictures more personal. My last few pictures were taken in my home town and portray parts of my memory from my childhood. Th effects I used also add to the vintage feel by making the photos appear old fashioned looking and distressed.
Hi Kat,
ReplyDeleteThe first picture is my favorite. It appears to be the door that leads to the remaining
pictures, as if all of them were taken in the same place . The choice of these structures is outstanding. Changing the color to black and white emphasizes the vintage feel. All of your numbers and pictures are aligned, a very good, thought out presentation.

ReplyDeleteHey Kat,
ReplyDeleteThe construction was good, everything was numbered and spaced the same. I think you should have centered everything though. All your photos have small dimensions though.
Your communication was good. Your first 15 photos were taken in the same place, which tells your story of exploring. It kind of made your other photos seem out of place though.
Your conception was great. Like I said before, your first 15 photos are all taken in the same location which is a great concept, but I think you could have applied more filtering effects to give more of vintage look to them.
My favorite photo is #18. It looks like it was taken back in the 80s with the slightly washed out colors.
Kat,
ReplyDeleteYour construction as good everything was spaced and numbered the same. I think you could have added more design in your construction, to communicate your message more. You communication was great. I liked how the first 15 photos were of the same place. I can tell that places means a lot to you. My favorite photo is number 17. I think that intersection must have an important meaning to you and it drew me in as I tried to figure out what it was that made it so special. Your conception was good, all your pictures show many sides of your personality. I'm interested in getting to know more!

Hi Kat!
ReplyDeleteI like that I can see your perspective and what position you had to take when shooting these pictures. I think the orientation of some of your photos could be adjusted, such as the pictures with bars in them - you want to make sure that straight lines are matching up with the edges of your photos in most cases.
As for communication, your photos tell me that you definitely did your fair share of exploring Eastern State Penitentiary. But what else did ya do!? It may be hard for your audience to resonate with you since many of your photos are here.
A majority of your photos are from this location that is vintage in itself, but I'm not seeing your conception and what drew you in, or what you were interested in the most while you were there.
Oh, and my favorite is #9 because of the depth it shows, and how to guides to viewers eye all the way to the vanishing point.
ReplyDeleteHey Kat! You took some cool photos this week. Your Construction was okay. Everything was numbered but I wish there was more spacing between each picture. They also should have been centered. For Communication, I really enjoyed the rawness and dirtiness of your pictures. Your use of lighting and filters made the pictures feel old, as well. You also showed a lot of different angles and spaces in the Eastern State Penitentiary. It was like going on tour with you. That being said, I thought it was an easy way for you to get multiple pictures at one place. It got a little boring after the first 5 pictures there. Then after 15 photos of the Penitentiary and last few photos felt out-of-place. I thought the Conception was well done. I liked your use of lighting, angles, and distances. You had a lot of variety, which made it interesting to look through your blog. My vote for Picture of the week is #12. I felt like I was looking through your eyes. The little window framed the picture beautifully. I also like the dark wood outlining the white space. Good job!
ReplyDeleteHey Kay,
ReplyDeleteYou convey a really clear perspective and create sight-lines that really help the eye move all around your photographs. I echo what some of the other classmates are saying in terms of the photos' orientations needing some slight tweaking – if you're going for asymmetry, then commit to it! Don't be afraid to really make the viewer feel unease.
I see a wide majority of your photos are from the same place, one that's inherently vintage, so it makes me wonder how you'd approach this topic if you had tried to really get vintage within the editing process rather than with subject content.
I think my favorite was #12 – I could really place myself in your mind and see what you see, and that's really thought provoking.
Hi Kat!
ReplyDeleteform - They should be centered and I wanted to see horizontal photographs, too.
content - The Penitentiary itself is an old building and it is pretty hard to say it was a good object. I wish I could see more pictures of your memory and different variety of objects. I thought #17 was a good one, BUT I can see that you took the picture on the car because I could see the compartment and something reflected in the window. It is the same on #18.
impact - All of your pictures have vintage atmosphere.
I like your self-portrait#2. You are thinking about your memories? I like some vintage color and some real color mixed together on the picture. It shows your past and today well.
Hi Kat,
ReplyDeleteI like that you knocked most of your photos out in one place. Of all places, Eastern State Penitentiary is probably the best place to do that. The natural destruction of that place is enough to create a hauntingly vintage feel, which adds a lot to your concept.
I think 6 is my favorite one of your photos, just because of the filter and lighting of the jail cell. It almost looks like it could be a very close-up photo, but at a second glance, it was obviously taken from a few feet away. To me, that makes for pretty good construction and an effective use of framing.
I can appreciate that you wanted to communicate a sense of nostalgia in your hometown, but maybe there was a better way for you to relate all of your photos this week? Perhaps something along the lines of things that make you feel imprisoned, regardless of how dramatic that sounds, could have been a cool way to tie everything together.
