  1. There are so many churches in the area where I live. A few of them were built in the 19th century. I took a picture of one of them and I kept looking for more. We drove around the West Philadelphia/ University City area for approximately and hour. I used the settings in my iPod to make the black and white pictures.
The sign for the Glory Baptist Church is important to me because we spent our first eleven years there as a family. That building is empty now.

    1. Belmont Charter School is in the formerly Father Divine Church.
The family picture is of my mother's grandparents and their children.
Number 17 is taken from my 87 year old mother's bedroom. She still has her mother's lamp that still works. On her dresser are cards and gifts from her children and grandchildren. Her reflection is in the mirror.

  2. Hi Judith!

form - Fun to see have both horizontal and vertical photographs and they are organized well in the center. However, picture #3 and #11 seem the same. I would like to know form of your self-portrait (#13) is vertical on purpose.

content - Your contents are interesting to me because I am not Philadelphia and happy to know the history here. I like picture #3 or #11 (the same one?)'s angle very much.

impact - Some vintage atmosphere from pictures with classic old color. Picture #15 caught my attention from that art? and the whole color of the picture. I got the biggest impact from your picture #12. Not because it says "vintage" but because the barred window makes items inside mysterious...I can't tell what they really look like!

I like picture #12. Because of the impact I wrote above! :-)

  3. Thanks Mayuko, I did not realize I upload the same picture twice. Number 13 is vertical in purpose. I tried to do something different.Believe or not #15 is a picture of curtains.

    1. Your welcome. You mean picture #14? That surprised me a lot! Still can't believe it was curtains. Though it was right in front of the window I thought it was a screen, partition, or something.

  4. Hi Judith! Good construction, but I think your explanation should be in the post and not in the comments. I really like your concept for these photos. Churches are a big part of Philly history and it's always about what parish you are from. Your composition needs a little bit of work to make the photos pop. Straighten up some of the pictures, and get a better angle on them. Your coloring looks nice too. Most of your photos are not touched up that much. You let the age of the buildings speak for themselves which is nice. My favorite photo is #6. I like the subject of the photo because I see it all the time and it just reminds me of Philly so much.

  5. Hey Judith,
The construction was good, everything was centered, numbered, and spaced the same. All of your photos have small dimensions though.
Your communication was good. We can see that church is important to you, as well as family.
Your conception was good. I think you could have tried to take different pictures of churches instead of just the doors and top of the buildings. Maybe some pictures inside if you could have? I also think you could have done some editing to make them look more vintage, like overlays of scratches or adding frames.
My favorite photo is #8. It really looks vintage, like it was taken a long time ago. I love photos of buildings and the sky with clouds. The cloud really changed the photo.

  6. Judith,
Your photos are constructed well this week! They are all centered and well organized. I enjoyed looking through your photos because I was able to see the story you were portraying. I like how almost all of your photos display the same subject, but are taken at different angles and show a different perspective. I can tell that churches are special to you and therefore I get the sense of memory. I think you could have edited the photos a little more to make them look more vintage. My favorite photo is number 15! This really gives off the vintage/memory vibe through the old gate and plants growing on it. I also think you edited it well!

  7. Hey Judith,
Your photos are fairly well constructed this week! They are, however, a bit unorganized compositionally. The narrative you were trying to communicate was, personally, a bit difficult to follow, but I appreciate the various vantage points of the same few subjects. My favorite photo from this set was #15, as it depicts a solid "vintage" motif – it looks like an old processed photograph my grandparents have in their photo album. It's toned nicely and fairly blurred and unsaturated, and it's striking.

  8. Hi Judith,

Your construction is good, but I think it could use some more focus. This can be done with cropping and framing your subjects, which can be a bit tricky with things like churches, which are massive! Maybe it would've helped you to get further away from the churches so that you could frame them between trees, people, other buildings. Or getting closer would also add some mystery.

Photo 17 is my favorite, and I think it is the most well-communicated. I appreciate that you provided the context of it being your 87-year-old mother's bedroom, but I already sort of knew what was going on based on all of the 'mom' ish memorabilia, and her reflection in the mirror.

The concept you're going for overall is a bit vague, but I can tell by looking at your photos that you have a very interesting family background— I think I was going for some of the same ideas in my photos for the past few weeks. Maybe that's one way you could use these photos in a final portfolio.
