For this particular topic, I was really pushing myself. I wanted to construct a narrative with my images that really invoked a sense of nostalgia. This admittedly wasn't my initial approach to the topic; I went with the clichéd "vintage" looking images, but I felt really insincere about it – that isn't my aesthetic, and I knew it the whole time. I went back and I tried to think about what I considered to be "vintage" photography.

Immediately, my mind was flooded with early- to mid-20th century Americana and the advent of photojournalism. As a Journalism student focusing in magazine studies, I've had the privilege of coming into close contact with old LIFE magazines, and some of the editorial photo stories are really striking. There's a distinctive blurry, grainy, low-contrast, high ambience aesthetic to older colored photographs that really captivates me, and I wanted to try and embody that in my own photographs this week.

I exclusively used Snapseed's "Grainy Film" feature, along with the default "Tune Image" tools, to play around with each photo until I reached a point where I felt satisfied with how authentically "vintage" I thought they looked.

  1. Hi Courtney! In terms of your construction, most of your pictures are numbered and evenly spaced, but they aren’t numbered. I really like the way you grouped your pictures by their color scheme and how there’s a variety of horizontal and vertical pictures though! For your communication, you have a variation of pictures that can be easily read and pictures that are harder to decipher. I really like your first self-portrait because it reminds me of chewing “Fruit Stripes” gum and blowing bubbles when I was young. In terms of conception of your pictures, it seems like all of your pictures were taken while you were on a trip. I like the subtle similarities in your pictures, such as the color schemes and some of the content as well (#12 and #13 both have the wire fence and #11 and #12 both have green tints to them). My vote for POW is #11 because I like the texture of the wood. I also like the fact that I can’t tell if this picture is taken indoors or outdoors. The distressed shades make me think this was taken indoors, but the wooden post seems like it belongs outdoors. Overall, good job!

  2. Hey Courtney! Good construction. Top notch. Very simple and easy to read. Conceptually, when I was first looking through your pictures I got this weird Breaking Bad vibe. It was hard to see what you were going for. I really thought this was just a random collection of pictures but after reading your notes, it makes more sense. Your pictures are not vintage in the style of 1800s/sepia/old yeller looking folk pictures. For every picture that's in that style, your group of photos is specifically suited to your style and it's clear as day with this set. Good job on pushing yourself to find what makes you happy. My favorite photo is #5. You did a good job of capturing the old journalism style you describe here. The photo looks like something you would find in an old magazine from the 80s/90s

  3. Hey Courtney,
The construction was good, everything was centered, numbered, and spaced the same. The actual photo sizes are a little small though.
Your communication was good. Some of your photos were a little obvious, but still gave off the vintage vibe. Maybe there was some story or memory behind them for you though.
Your conception was good. Some photos were a little too clear and HD. I know you don't like that, but maybe you could have used some of the vintage filters and lessened their style?
My favorite photo is #9. I think you originally had more of filter with more effects to it and I thought it looked really cool. The photo is still amazing with the blue/green filter, vignette, and the clear lines of different brightness from the center to the outside of the image.

  4. Your pictures are large and centered with the numbers. I can definitely see where some of your pictures bring back memories eg: the pictures of the rode. It looks like there is a picture taken from an airplane window as well (#2).The concept of what is vintage to you comes across. Numbers 19, 15, and 10 are mystery to me. Our professor told us not to forget about mystery. You did not. Number to me is all about memory with the smoke and the sun together. It is a striking photo.

  5. Courtney,

The communication was good, however your pictures area little small and could be bigger. Your communication was good but I agree with Kevin that some pictures were a little obvious. I can see that you were tying a story to each picture. You conception was great as well. Some pictures were not as vintage as others and would have liked to see more like #8. My favorite for this week is 8, because I though it captured a lot and drew me in.

  6. Hey Courtney! You had some nice pictures this week. For your Construction, you did great. Everything was centered, evenly spaced, and numbered. Your Communication was good. It gave me a southwestern feel. Your pictures weren’t the typical “vintage” look but I can definitely see the connection to the old LIFE magazines. I could also see your pictures on an old-fashioned postcard. Finally, I thought your Conception was okay. I really enjoyed the blue-sky photos; they were cohesive. But the darker photos seemed out of place, in-connection to the blue-sky pictures. My vote for Picture of the Week is #7. The picture has an overall washed-out feeling to it, which gives me a vintage vibe. I also like the ombre sky. It draws my eye down to the horizon. Finally, the red truck adds a nice pop of color to the photo. This is not a typical vintage picture but it still feels like an older scene to me. Good job this week!

  7. Courtney,

Great construction! Your blog is very nice to look at as all the photos are large in size, centered, and evenly spaced.

Awesome communication. Some photos have more of a sense of mystery than others, but for most of them I had to look at the photo for a while.

I loved the conception. I liked how a lot of photos were taken outside and had a vanishing point.

My favorite photo is number 14 because it really has me wondering what "meow wolf" is.

  8. Hi Courtney!

form - They all are centered and I could enjoy both vertical and horizontal photographs.

content - I like that you took pictures from what we have learned from this class so far. You have different kind of works which is great. #9, #16 and #19 are pretty mysterious.

impact - Actually your note gave me a big impact, but the biggest impact was your sp#2! I tried to find your nostalgia, vintage, and memory from that picture and it was very difficult. That gave me the biggest impact, too. That's like a surprising end of a film!

My favorite is your sp#2. The impact was too big. Yes too big!

  9. Hi, Courtney

Your construction and communication are nice. There is a lot of purposeful framing— getting closer, cropping things out manually, zooming in on textures. These all add a lot to your photos, and it shows that some thought went into them. But one thing I really appreciate about all of your photos is how colorful they are. So many vintage filters tend to drain the color and vibrancy of people's photos, but yours show how super-saturation can also be used to communicate a vintage mood effectively. I also love the silliness of your self-portraits.

I love 15, 18, and 19 for taking more abstract views of everyday things. Maybe you used some sort of crystal or glass to take the photos through? Anyway, I think that is a creative way to take on the 'mystery' concept of this assignment.

    Nice work!
