Self-portrait #1

Self-portrait #2

Note

I used Camera+ app to take and edit pictures.  It was pretty easy for me to find objects having ambience or atmosphere that is capable of making you think something happened in your past. Some pictures were taken in Japan, where I am from. It was, however, very difficult for me to find "vintage flavor" objects because I tried not to make old stuff as an object. That is the reason I mainly used "Highlights & Shadows," "Brightness & Contrast," "Exposure," "Temperature," "Saturation," "Intensity," and sometimes "Tint," and "Duotone" during edit so that you could feel mystery and old flavor. Some pictures are colorful just to get stronger attention from you...and myself (I love flowers).

Extra story: Picture #8 was taken when my Japanese friend's mother served me a cup of green tea with real gold powder. Very traditional way for celebration and new year but what was funny is that there was no celebration on that day this month!

  1. Hi Mayuko! For your construction, all of your pictures are numbered, centered, and evenly spaced. You also have a mix of horizontal and vertical pictures. For your communication, most of your pictures can be easily read. I like that they’re all quite different from each other. Picture #8 looks so delicious and I really enjoyed reading your short background story behind the picture! I also really like picture #24 because it makes me wonder why that toy is on the shelf and I like that you and see the shadow of the candles, without actually seeing the candles themselves. In terms of the conception of your pictures, the overall theme seems to be travel. It looks like most, if not all of your pictures were taken on your travels to Japan. A lot of your pictures seem to be things of great importance to you, so it was nice to get to know more about you through your pictures! My vote for POW is picture #12 because of its simplicity. I had look at it for awhile in order to take in all of the details. At first, I didn’t even see the mountain through the window! The blue tint of the picture creates a vintage-feel. Overall, good job!

  2. Hi Mayuko! You have good construction for your post. It's nice and spaced out. I like the way you edited your photos for this set. I like your choice of colors on pictures like #14 and #18. I don't really get a vintage vibe from your set though. Some of your pictures do have an older feel to them but most of them seem like pictures that were taken recently. It doesn't really transport the viewer to a different time period or your past. My favorite picture is #24. The candle shadows, assuming that's what they are, are a really nice touch to the photo subject. The coloring gives this photo a more vintage vibe to your set than some of the others do.

  3. Hello Mayuko,
The construction was good, everything was centered, numbered, and spaced the same. The actual photo sizes are a little small though.
Your communication was good. Some of your photos were a little obvious, but still gave off the vintage vibe. #9 I think was your best mysterious-like photo, it really told a story and the filter really helped to paint the picture.
Your conception was good. I think some more editing to make them seem old and vintage would have helped, but they can still be memories of yours that you wanted to capture.
My favorite photo is #9. The filter really makes it seem like it was taken forever ago before color pictures. It makes you wonder what happened and why he is being arrested(?).

  4. Hi Mayuko,
Many of your photos depict travel, which evokes memory. The numbers and pictures are centered. They were large enough for me to see what you wanted to portray. I like the transformer. My son was crazy about them back when the original cartoons were on TV. The clothing being donated to Goodwill is a picture of vintage and memory. Were you communicating with the new building going up that one day what is new will be old. that's what I saw.

  5. Hi there!

    Your photos are so interesting!

Although there is a lot going on in some of these photos, you constructed them well, centering everything and having straight edges line up.

As for communication, some of your pictures resonate with me in that way that you notice things that others might not, and that you don't just look ahead, you look around. Unfortunately, none of them really take me to another time. So I think getting more extreme with vintage filters would help!

Conceptually, I think your photos are just that, things that you find interesting in everyday life. I do think some pictures might fall under that "because they looked cool" category, but for the most part, I like that your viewer can see every which way you look while you're out and about.

My favorite photo is #10 because it's the most vintage-looking out of all of your photos, and it's clear to see you're looking down at something someone else might not have noticed.

  6. Maruko,
Your photos this week are very unique and interesting! The construction is good with pictures centered and numbered. I can see that it might have been hard to find subjects that appear to be vintage, but I think you did a good job of evoking memory. I am able to tell that these pictures mean something to you and the subjects bring about certain memories. Some pictures, however, did throw me off a bit as they weren't consistent with the rest, such as the flowers. I like your editing on the pictures, but again I think the vintage vibe would have been more powerful if it was more consistent. My favorite photo is number 3! I like the angle you took and it really showed that traveling is something that brings you fond memories.

  7. Maruko,
I need to start off by saying that #12 is my absolute favorite of this set; while it doesn't read explicitly as "vintage," it's definitely the most visually striking – I really get a good sense of time, location, and mood, and that's hard to establish with smartphone photography a lot of the time.

There was a lot of variety in the ways you constructed and organized your images, which, while interesting, kind of inhibited your ability to clearly communicate a narrative or a sense of memory/"vintage" aesthetic. Additionally, you seemed to not have edited a lot of them to embody whatever you thought "vintage/memory" meant to you in a way that was really evident to me.

  8. Maruko,

Your construction was good. All your photos were evenly spaced, centered, and numbered correctly.

Your communication was great. I like how you tried to make the subjects of the photos vintage instead of the effects. However, your photos could benefit if you put some vintage filters and effects on.

My favorite photo is number 3 because it confuses me why there is a toothbrush on the luggage carousel

  9. Hi Mayuko! You have some cool photos this week. Your Construction was great. Your pictures were centered, evenly spaced, and numbered. Your Communication, was done nicely. I like your use of lighting. It helped create a vintage feeling in your pictures. But I think you could have used more filters/effects to create even more of a vintage feeling. I also got a city vibe and felt like you were taking me on a tour. It helped create a cohesive blog. Finally, your Conception was good. I like the variety of colors, angles, and distances. It also made looking through your blog more interesting. I’m voting for #12 for Picture of the Week. I like the blue, washed-out coloring; it gives me a vintage feeling. I also like how the window frames the outside and the curtains frame the window. It draws my eye further into the photo. Nice job this week!
