I like to take pictures that capture the mystery behind what most people who see as normal. I try to convey a feeling through my pictures. I took the pictures using my iPhone camera and edited them using the iPhone editing function and the aviary app.

  1. Picture # 6 caught my eye. Even though ice cycles are white, making the picture black and white makes the ice cycles more pronounced. They are much more white. Taking them close up provides details that would not have been seen otherwise. The ice cycles remind me of teeth of a prehistoric mammoth. I am learning to take pictures close up. This picture is a good reason for doing so.

  3. Picture 13 caught my attention in this series of photos. At first glance it seems simple, but then I noticed the shadowing behind the grate which drew my attention to wonder, what was behind the gate? I like how attention to detail draws my eyes in and then around the whole photo.

    1. For construction, I liked how you set your blog up with all your photos centered. For communication, I felt like you were trying to communicate how you felt about Winter. For conception I felt like your motivation was the love/hate relationship with winter. The ice cold photos of the snow followed by being locked indoors with books, or under a blanket with a candle. That was was resonated with me because I know that's how I feel about the bitter cold. I enjoyed all the different angles and how some were close up and some were far away, but all provided great detail. I vote for #13! Great Job!

  4. Hi Kat! I really enjoyed looking through your photos. As far as Construction, it was a little confusing having the picture numbers below the picture. Also, Picture 1 is the only centered photo with the number to the right of the picture. The rest are left aligned and have the numbers below. For Communication, I really enjoyed the raw, outdoorsy feel. I personally love nature, so I automatically connected to some of your pictures. I thought the Conception was well done. I liked that you took a lot of close-up photos, to show the detail. My vote for Picture of the week is #3. I like the use of negative space. The black background makes the object pop. Great stuff!

  5. Picture 2 is a great picture to look at. The mystery behind it is fascinating. The lighting makes it look like you are following a path to a certain place at the bottom of the cave. Is it the right place? Are you going in the right direction? It's easy to tell what the picture is but the purpose behind it is a mystery.

  6. Hi Kat,
The construction needs a little work as only the first photo is centered. I don't mind the numbers being under the photos, but there needs to be some spaces between pictures.
Your communication was good. You took a variety of photos in many different places. Some pictures can't be viewed larger though which makes it a little hard to look at them and understand.
Your conception was good. All your photos show some sort of mystery, especially the cave one. Some of them were at strange viewpoints, which I liked.
My favorite photo is #7. I like photos of fires and the blue tone really gives it a different look than normal.

  7. Construction: Picture 1 is not centered. Also each space between two pictures should be the same.
Communication: pictures 2, 4, and 8 got my attention because I don't know what they are. Did you use the same curtain or lace on pictures 4 and 14?
Conception: I am not sure about the conception of picture 1 and 5. Just nature or something more than that?

I like picture 2. I am wondering where it is and what they are.

  8. Kat,
Your construction was good, except some photos had more space between them than others. However, they were all centered and the same size. Your communication was great. I liked the variety of everything including location, subject, angle, contrast, and tone. All your photos sparked my interest and kept me thinking. Your conception was really good as well, there were some photos that I didn't know what I was looking at, which is good because the assignment was mystery. My favorite photo is number 10 because I really like the dark shadow on the building, it looks like an eerie castle.

  9. Hi Kat -

Your construction is great! Fragmenting your photos definitely works for you, and does not make it too difficult for the viewer to realize what's pictured.

In terms of communication, your photos show what you've stated at the bottom of your post, that you like to find mystery in what others find normal. You show this in your photos by shooting at extreme angles, giving the viewer a new perspective on something they've most likely seen before.

In terms of conception, you can tell that you were practicing directed shooting, trying to find that mystery in everything you shot.

My favorite photo is photo #10. We see these kinds of railings all the time, but I'm sure not many people get as up close and personal as you have while shooting this photo. You also did a good job of using the curved edges of the railing make the photo look centered.

  10. Hi Kat,

The construction of your post is good. Everything looks well organized, and it looks like you took the suggestion of others to get that done, which is all good. I like that you have a goal of making the ordinary extraordinary, but it looks like you really have been going to some interesting places (especially in photo 2, what is that?) I can tell you had an idea about what these photos should look like, as some of your angles hint at pre-visualization, like the photo of the books. However, for the future, I think your photos would be even more interesting if they had some more prominent subjects like people, or stronger textures. I also think photos like your #11 and #12 would be better-composed if they were straight on, not at an angle. My favorite is 7 because of the framing and textures, although my guess is that you didn't mean to give it a blue tone.
