I’ve been using the app Snapseed, on my Galaxy Note 2 phone.  I really like this app.  It makes it easy to create and customize different looks.  It also automatically saves the pictures to my Gallery, so I don’t have to go back to the app to view the finished pictures.  I used the “Black & White” Filter for the black and white affects and the “Noir” Filter for the tonal affects.

Black and white pictures = 1, 2, 3, 7, 9, 10, 13, and 14.  Tonal pictures = 4, 5, 6, 8, 11, 12, and 15.

  1. Picture 12 is really good. The building tone of the picture gives it a nice vintage look. The coloring also lends itself to that. I like the composition of the building being in the distance and hidden by the trees. It makes the building look like something that you shouldn't mess around it. Very mysterious indeed.

  2. Hello Jay,
The construction was good, everything was centered and spaced the same. Although I think it might look a little cleaner if there was space between the bottom of the picture and the next number.
Your communication was great. As you saw on my post, I also love nature. I actually recognize a few places from your pictures. Anyway, your photos really felt mysterious. What happened to this building? Where do these train tracks go? What does this key open? Etc...
Your conception was great. I can see the ideas you had for each of them and what your motivation was for taking them.
My favorite photo is #15. It reminds me of old movies (think The Wizard of Oz without color.)

  3. Jay,
Your construction was good. Every photo is centered however you could add a short description at the bottom describing what apps you used to edit. Your communication was great. I love how every photo is outside. I love nature, and I assume you do too because of all these photos. The locations you were at look very pretty. I especially liked the abandoned buildings, they really fit with the mystery aspect of the assignment. Your conception was great as well. To me, all the photos were about the serene, empty, and quiet atmosphere at comes with forests in the winter. My favorite photo is number 12, it reminds me of something you would see in a horror movie.

  4. Hi Jay! For your construction, I like that you took both horizontal and vertical pictures and varied them throughout. All of your pictures are centered and numbered, so it was really easy to follow! Also, I like how you took both close up pictures, as well as pictures from a distance. The communication is clear, yet still mysterious. The pictures are identifiable for the most part, but the mystery stems from the location of where these pictures were taken. I especially like picture #11 (POW) because it made me try to imagine what the building was before it became deserted. I also like the tonal effects that you added because it adds to the mystery. In terms of conception, all of your pictures seem to be taken in the same area, which I loved. It seems to be a completely uninhabited location, but there’s still so much life to your pictures. The edits you made really added to the mystery – good job!

  5. Jay,

I enjoyed your communication and found your blog to be easy to read as all of the photos were organized very well. For communication, I enjoyed that all your photos related to each other and going down your blog was like reading a story, each picture a new chapter. I enjoyed the outdoor theme a lot because I lived in front of a woods growing up and loved exploring. I felt like you were trying to deliver the message of the mystery of the outdoors which I think is interesting and adventurous for conception. My favorite for the week is #3 because I sensed the mystery of what was occurring 'down the path not traveled'.

  6. Hi Jay - looks like you're an explorer like me!

It's actually really pleasing how well constructed your photos are. Everything that you want in the picture fits perfectly in the frame, with the exception of the subjects you've pushed to the corner to fragment.

In terms of communication - it seems like you like to wander AND wonder. Wander in your surroundings, but also wonder what has happened there before, even if that means pushing the boundaries to find out. I've also always wanted to explore an abandoned, or demolished building, and your pictures give me a sense of actually being there and looking up at something that once was.

In terms of conception, I think you've taken these photos to show some sort of journey. Getting to point A to point B while looking up and down at the world around you, and noticing some hidden gems along the way.

My favorite photo is #13. The way you've structured the picture makes it easier to realize that the trees are leading down a path without even having to show the path. It's very eerie looking, yet hopeful because you can see the light shining on the trees on the right side.

    Great job!

  7. Hi Jay! I loved looking at your pictures! The construction was great and I like the variety in your pictures. I really enjoyed the subjects you took pictures of, as I am a nature person as well. I feel that it is such a good subject because there is so much mystery and wonder in nature! The different angles and dimensions of your photos are very visually appealing. I like how you used paths to draw the viewers eyes to certain spots in the photos. Number 12 is my favorite! It makes me wonder what that building used to be and why it can to be what it is now. I also like how the window and doorway give light to the picture. Great job!

  8. Construction: Need some spaces between pictures because it confused me to know each number. It is good to see horizontal pictures since we tend to take vertical ones using smartphones!

Communication: It seems you have been to places many people do not know where they are. I enjoyed each picture, especially 3, 6, 8, 11, and 12.

Conception: To go and find something irregular to show us some mystery? I would like to know how you have typical black and white color pictures and some toned? ones.

My fav picture is 8. It seems like a gate we should not open, and that is interesting and scary at the same time!

  9. Jay,

First of all, I really liked photo #4 - the organic asymmetry of the branches were captivating, and there's this ephemeral glow to the image that is really breathtaking. You have a wide assortment of camera perspectives which I like, and you seem to have captured the element of mystery and really mastered various ways to tone black and white images, which is something I respect and am quite jealous of. You seem to really like smooth, curved shapes and surfaces. I'd like to see what happens when you're confronted with sharp angles and contrasts.
