All of the photos were edited with Pixlr or Snapseed. I tried to capture the emptiness of crowded places. Places that are usually bustling with people. Some of the other photos are shots of random objects framed in a mysterious way.

  1. Picture #9 has an air of mystery, and that is what drew me to it. One of the first thing I thought of was the location of the photograph. I see the fireplace, which is quite unique in shape. There appears to be a carving on the wall. Neither of which give a clue to where this picture was taken. The carving seems three dimensional. The lights and shadows around the fireplace accent the shape. I took a second look because because the wall carving reminds me of an emblem for a magician. Jacob may have been interested in the shape of the fireplace and the wall carving.

  2. Hi Jake! You took some nice photos. Your Construction was good. Your pictures were centered and evenly spaced. I wish they were numbered though. As far as Communication, you gave me an industrial feel. I liked the use of sculpture and architecture. Your use of lighting also helped with the “mystery” theme. The lighting made the photos feel illusive. For the Conception, I thought you did well. The use of both close-up and far-away photos, gave a good variety. Finally, my vote for Picture of the Week goes to #12. At first I couldn’t figure out what the picture was, which gave me a sense of mystery. I also like the symmetry and lighting of the photo. However, I wish you didn’t put picture #11 next to #12 because it allowed me to figure out what #12 was. I would have loved it to stay unidentifiable. Good job overall!

  3. Hey Jake,
The construction is good. Everything was centered and numbered, but I think it would look a little better with a space between each photo.
Your communication was good. Your photos were all filled with the same kind of theme, architecture. They were all things that were designed and thought of to look good.
Your conception was great. The photos were about empty places and spacing. The lighting behind the keyboard is also a cool effect, it reminded me of the first time I saw a backlit keyboard.
My favorite photo is #1. It looks like you used some sort of fisheye effect which is very different from everyone else. I like to see when stadiums and arenas are empty, it's eery to see all the empty seats and to be so quiet.

  4. Jake,
Good Construction. Everything was centered but you could improve by adding a short description of what editing apps you used and spacing the photos out a bit more. Your communication was great. I felt like they all had an urban theme. I like how a lot of pictures were taken from a low angle, representing how big a city can seem. Your conception was awesome, I felt like I was exploring the city with you as I was scrolling through these photos. I like how you show some of the most beautiful parts of the city and also some of the most simple (power lines). My favorite photo is 10 because I'm not too sure what is is, but it looks awesome, which is perfect for the mystery aspect of this assignment.

  6. Jake,

I liked the construction of your post, but I think some additional space between your photos would be beneficial since there is a lot going on in your pictures. The communication of your photographs was great. It seems like you go pretty cool places and are always ready to snap a photo. The keyboard resonated with me because I know as students, it's something we can't escape. For conception, I felt like a lot of your photographs were about finding the beauty in all the chaos as there was something drawing me in to a focus point in each photo. My favorite for the week is #10, because with that angle it really makes me question where you are and what is at the end of the hall.

  7. Hi Jake! For your construction, your pictures were all centered and numbered. I think it would have been easier to follow if the numbers were on top of the pictures instead of below them though. Also, it would have been nice to see all of the pictures in the same size to make it easier to view them. Your communication was great! The majority of your pictures were difficult to decipher and mysterious in their own ways. I especially liked picture #8 (POW). It reminded me of the Batman cave! For your conception, you had a variety of different pictures. It looks like some of them were taken in some sort of museum, but I liked that it wasn’t just explicit pieces of art. Each picture told a story in a way. You started outdoors and then went inside and ended again outdoors, which I thought was creative.

  8. Construction: Need some spaces between pictures. It is good you took both vertical and horizontal pictures!

Communication: Great to know old or recent object as a theme of each picture. I enjoyed the little time travel through your works.

Conception: Very interesting to know your object which is a great art or something we see almost every day in our daily life.

My fav picture is 7. It makes me curious...I would like to know what they are and where you took the picture. Little boxes are very cute.

  9. Hi Jake -

I love the construction of some of these pictures, but I think there could be more mystery. Judging by your shooting and the locations you go to, I definitely think mixing it up and shooting from different angles would be beneficial.

In terms of communication, your photos tell me that you're on-the-go, taking pictures of places you've been and how you get there. These pictures are great, but I think taking a picture of one aspect of your locations, or not-so-obvious elements of your surroundings would be good to keep your viewer guessing. Photo #5 reminds me of everyday life, sitting waiting for the subway to come, but could also symbolize life, and how much we really do sit and wait for things to come or happen.

As for conception, it looks like you were going for a compilation of daily interactions from a distance.

My favorite photo is photo #8. The natural light (my favorite) in this photo is awesome! It's another photo that symbolizes waiting and makes me wonder where you're going and what you're waiting for, even how long you've been waiting.

  10. Hi Jake,

The construction of these images are, overall, very engaging; however I don't really get a good sense of "mystery" – I look at these photos and can easily identify what's going on. I can also tell that you have a wide variety of places to shoot, which is very promising. You seem to like structural elements and shapes, which is great for black and white, and I'm excited to see what happens when color is thrown into the mix.

  11. Hi Jake,

I agree with what a few other people said here— there's not a lot of mystery going on, but just the fact that you had your phone to photograph out at all of these places is a great start to getting interesting photos. Maybe if you focused on specific details about these places, it would be more mysterious, and generate more interest. I like that you photographed a statue, and I think it could have been even more effective if you just got a little bit closer to a detail on it. I love the lighting in 8. I can imagine the silhouette of someone standing in that room— that would be super mysterious. I think perhaps if you waited for some people to walk through the spaces you're photographing, that would make all of your work a lot more conceptual.
